Memememememe! :) [Jul. 30th, 2009|03:25 pm]
Meme swiped from, as always, joisbishmyoga.

The Rules:

1. Comment to this post with the name of a character that I have written in fics. Or geeked out about. Or RPed. You should probably make sure it's one I've written more than once or twice.

2. I will comment telling you the following:

A. What initially prompted me to like the character enough to write about him/her.
B. One of his/her best traits.
C. One of his/her worst traits.
D. How easy/difficult I find it to write the character.
E. The story/chapter/paragraph/phrase where I feel that I truly captured the character (if I've written them).
F. My plans (if any) to write the character in the near future.

Candygram, er, meme! [Jul. 8th, 2009|12:17 pm]
Reply to this meme by yelling "Words!" (or you can just ask for the meme, I won't mind) and I will give you five words that remind me of you. Then post them in your LJ and explain what they mean to you.

Meme ganked from candy--chan.

Danny Phantom
Fanfiction
Penguins
Martial arts
Detective Conan

1. Danny Phantom: Well, obviously, it's one of my fandoms... I enjoyed the show up 'til season 3, at which point I declared anything past "Reality Trip" non-canon. There's a lot of fun psych stuff you can do with the characters, but only if you ignore Butch Hartmann's utter hatred of complexity, character development, or grey areas.

2. Fanfiction: My main creative outlet. I have 110 stories up on FF.net, though a good portion of those are fanfic poems, and a lot more floating around the net in various places, some of which I don't even know about. The first story I ever wrote was a fanfic, a Cat From Outer Space fanfic, when I was five. It won an award from my school. :)

3. Penguins: I LOVE Penguins. I find them adorable. My main name a lot of places is penprp, which is short for Penguin Purple. There's just something about penguins that gets to me. And yet, I am unable to use Linux...

4. Martial Arts: I have a brown belt in White Crane Kung Fu, a green belt in Tae Kwon Do, and a white belt in karate. *Uedo-ryuu style, can't remember the name of the school. I didn't stay in it long, thanks to a pulled groin muscle.* Martial arts are important to me because I have the typical Irish temper, with added Asperger's tendencies, which means when I blow, I go nuclear. Martial arts gave me the discipline not to LOSE my temper at the slightest provocation..

5. Detective Conan: My current fandom. I love the people in it-- so many of them are nice and welcoming and very TOLERANT. Coming off of DP phandom and its trufans, this was a nice change. Plus, there's SO MUCH I can do in terms of playing with the heros' psychological makeup, which is good, 'cause my mystery skills suck like an Orrick XL. Also, Conan is just adorable when he's traumatized. :)

Yet another meme from Jo... [May. 28th, 2009|03:58 pm]
Swiped from joisbishmyoga-

Comment to this entry and I'll pick up to three of your fandoms. You must then update your journal and answer the following questions:

1. What got you into this fandom in the first place?
2. Do you think you'll stay in this fandom or eventually move on?
3. Favorite episodes/books/movies, etc?
4. Do you participate in this fandom (fanfiction, graphics, discussions)?
5. Do you think more people should get into this fandom?

Jo gave me YGO, DCMK, Danny Phantom.

YGO-

1. One word- VATHARA. I blame her for a lot of my fanwork, to be honest. She wrote a little YGO short. It looked interesting. I watched the dub. I got mugged by a bunny bearing a short scene. Next thing I know, I've written "Ankoku wa Osore Nai (Don't Fear the Darkness)" and that was it.

2. I was never particularly active in YGO fandom, since it was large and crazy, and to be honest, the dub kind of sucks and that's the only thing I know. I hope to finish "Scavenger Hunt," which I've been working on for three years, but after that? I dunno.

3. I actually liked the American-made theatrical movie. Did I mention I had a high tolerance for cheese? Also, the whole VR arc is probably one of my favorites, if only for Kaiba chained to a wall...

4. Like I said, I don't really do much other than my little stories, which are sorta stalled.

5. Umm... It's a big enough fandom, more people aren't going to CHANGE things much. And The Abridged Series does more than enough to pull in new converts. :)

Danny Phantom-

1. I was flipping channels in boredom at one point, and happened to find an episode of it. I think it was "Bitter Reunions." It interested me. I did a web search. I watched more eps. I got hooked. I wrote a fic. ... I'm very predictable. :)

2. Fandom-wise? I'm DONE. I may do DP fanfic in the future, I'm kicking around a DP/DC crossover that's a sequel to "Running Blind," my DC/CSI crossover, but "the phandom" is full of BATSHIT INSANE people. I'm too violent and "mature" for them.

3. "Bitter Reunions." "My Brother's Keeper." "Reign Storm." "The Ultimate Enemy."... Oh, anything that has Marty Isenberg's writing credit on it except for "Splitting Images." I despise Season 3 and refuse to believe anything after Reality Trip existed, though.

4. I write fanfic. I used to hang out on a discussion board until the "trufans" got their torches and pitchforks out. Right now, I talk to some of the sane Danny Fans I know from other fandoms, and that's about the extent of it.

5. Dude, no. See previous comments about "trufans." I don't know if they're still out there- I'm kind of afraid to check.

DCMK-

1. Icka. Who I discovered through Vathara, so see question one for YGO. :) I started reading her fics, got curious. About the same time, Skyechan posted a Danny vs. Kid pic to the DP board I was frequenting, and that got me more curious. I found the manga scanlations. I was hooked.

2. I'll likely stay in this fandom until it dies out from under me. I get more and better criticism here than I did with DP or YGO, and my big problem with PR was depression combined with the fact that the main series started to suck, and I lost inspiration. I can't see that happening with DC. Plus, y'know, no longer depressed, thank God.

3. Oh God, we'll be here all day. Um... Detective Koshien. Anything with Kid. Anything with Heiji. Especially anything with Heiji getting the shit beaten out of him. Anything where Kogoro proves that he has a brain and a heart. I LOVE the "We ripped off Speed" episode. I have a serious soft spot for Movie 6, for Yuusaku being badass... My favorite movies would be 9, 'cause competent Kogoro, 10 for Heiji, Kid, AND *kinda* Hakuba all in one place, and 7, for copious quantities of Heiji-whumphing. I liked all of them, though.

4. What fandom there is right now, I do try to participate in. MC1T seems to be dying, and I don't know where else to go...

5. Absolutely. It's a sane fandom with a lot of good writers, a lot of potential, and a lot of nice people.

More DC thoughts... [May. 23rd, 2009|12:49 pm]
Specifically, I have a disturbing fondness for watching Heiji get the shit beaten out of him. However, given the events of Movie 7, I think at the very least, the anime writers are on my side.

ETA-

One more for the "Takagi is a Badass" list... filler episode 405. In which Takagi gives another officer a SERIOUS dressing-down for jumping to conclusions in a murder case. ... Also he solves it. With help from Conan, but even that's only Conan pointing him at the evidence. Impressive.

Further ETA- *Hey, I post 'em as they come to me*

... Okay, "Murderer, Kudo Shinichi" is even MORE disturbing on screen than it is on paper. Which is impressive. Also, Shinichi and Heiji in the same room at the same time on the same case? Pure sex oozing out of the air. I'm kinda surprised Ran and Kazuha aren't sporting blushes that could set something on fire.

Meme [May. 22nd, 2009|02:05 pm]
Because I can't think of anything else to post... ganked from joisbishmyoga.

The problem with LiveJournal...we all think we are so close, but really, we know nothing about each other.

So, I want you to ask me something you think you should know about me.
Something that should be obvious, but you have no idea about.
(or just anything at all you wanted to know! :D)

Ask away. Then post this in your LJ and find out what people don't know about you!

Eheheh... [May. 8th, 2009|04:54 pm]
Sorry, life's been... interesting here. Still recovering from the acid reflux... Recovery from the surgery's been great, the reflux itself has been slower to go away, but it is going. I can have chocoate and Coke again, praise the gods.

So, um, I've been reading/watching a fair amount of DC stuff recently, including some videos... And is it just me, or does Conan have this really disturbing habit of posing like a pinup girl? He puts his hands behind his head, he stands hipshot... I don't seem to remember Shinichi doing this...

Remember me? [Mar. 29th, 2009|12:59 pm]
Hi, yeah. Not dead. The saga of the Dreaded Acid Reflux took an interesting turn... It was discovered I had gallstones, and gallbladder problems often cause an excess of stomach acid. So I was scheduled for laproscopic gallbladder removal. This is a very easy surgery, and I thank God they've invented it. That said, recovery still sucks, as I am gassy and occasionally nauseated, even if I'm not in pain.

My mother came down to take care of me the day of the surgery, and that evening, we watched Iron Man. A day or so later, I decided to break out the second disc that came with the movie, and watch the sneak preview of the animated series that came along with it.

Oh My GOD, it's horrible.

Spoiler Alert! )

I was not aware of that! [Feb. 20th, 2009|05:01 pm]
... Apparently, Walgreens Generic Cherry Pepto tastes like cake frosting. I was not aware of that.

I can live with this.

(Acid reflux is back, yes. Grrr. Argh.)
link1 comment|post comment

Yeah, I'm alive. [Feb. 13th, 2009|08:49 pm]
So I have mostly managed to conquer the dreaded Acid Reflux, and I got to go to Phoenix and visit my best friend. I was there six days, counting travel time. So sorry this is a bit late.

While I was out there, we went to Dave and Busters, and I did what I always do at arcades... blew all my money on whatever version of House of The Dead they have there. This one had 3 and 4, and I mainly played 3, it being cheaper and me being better able to handle the pump-action light gun than the machine gun.

I suck at these games. I suck royally. But I love them. I noticed that the voice acting in them's gotten better, which is damning with faint praise, I know. Given that 1 and 2 made Resident Evil 1 look well-acted, they had a LONG way up.

But I got to thinking, there are some interesting differences between HotD and RE, despite the huge similarities, and the big one is the zombies. If you don't want some minor game spoilers, stop reading now.

Everybody with me? Good.

RE's zombies are actually fairly well thought-out and explained. Sure, lots of handwavium on how the T-Virus really works, but at least it's mostly internally consistent. The big thing here is that RE Zombies are ALIVE. Okay yes, in Code: Veronica, the spill apparently resurrects corpses, but that seems to be a one-off. It certainly never happens in any of the other games that use it. So far, anyway.

HoTD's zombies seem to require dying first. Sophie, *In some endings* Goldman... we don't see too many conversions, but the ones we do see, the character is pretty much confirmed dead before rising. Except Daniel in 3's "bad ending," but he's a special case, being Patient 0 for his father's experiments.

Actually, we don't know if HotD's zombies are even infectious. G gets wounded in game 2, and shrugs it off. He's alive and well nineteen years later, in game 3. Game 1 has zombie researchers, but they could have been contaminated by a spill, rather than a carrier. And certainly Sophie looked just fine before she died. Goldman very likely could have injected himself, and it's an open question HOW the rest of the zombies got turned.

The only in-game explanation we get is the occasional vague line about "Genome theory." Which could mean damn near anything.

Geek that I am, my explanation is that what we've got is a retrovirus. It's capable of breeding to some extent in human tissue, but it only works if there's clinical death. If you survive long enough after being infected, your immune system clears it out, and you don't become a zombie. Hence G surviving game 2. Do enough tissue damage that oxygen deprivation starts setting in, and the virus kicks into gear, resurrects the dead tissue, and boom, zombie. Which can then create various mutations ala the bosses, if they weren't actually engineered by the psychos making things.

... God, I'm a geek...

Help! I need somebody! [Jan. 16th, 2009|03:55 pm]
Sorry, I can't resist a song cue... But seriously, I need help. My Dell desktop is five years old, and it's chugging occasionally and making funny noises. I think there's a good chance I may soon need a new computer. Anybody have any suggestions? I'd like to keep it under 1000 bucks, and really all I need is a desktop that's Internet-compatible and runs Windows XP... Is there anyway I can GET a desktop that runs Windows XP anymore?

Hoping y'all can help me, my computer knowledge is sorely lacking.

EDIT: Sorry I was unclear. I'm looking for suggestions as to brand and/or model. Right now, all of them are just "Computers" to me, and I have NO idea what the technical stuff says...

Musings [Jan. 12th, 2009|04:22 pm]
Various things have been running through my head lately, and since I promised to post at least once a week, I figured I'd infl... er, share some of them with you guys.

It's kind of sad to admit this, but I realized the other day... I'm still not over school. From fourth grade on, I was pretty much an outcast because of my weight, poor social skills, and geeky demeanor. Looking back, some of it was the Asperger's, and I just didn't know how to act, and nobody knew how to take me. Some of it was simple arrogance that comes with being ten years old and very smart. Some of it just came from being the Other, and you know how kids are about things like that.

But I'm 30 now, and I realize... I'm still not over it. I still have an unconscious flinch around pretty people, especially girls. Thin, attractive girls made my life hell in high school, and while I know most people don't even CARE about me ninety percent of the time, I'm just moving scenery... I see one and I immediately brace for impact.

Good-looking guys, too. Especially if they show any interest in me or what I'm doing, part of my brain still goes to battle stations, because I KNOW it's just a setup, he's planning on laughing at me with his friends once I'm stupid enough to take his bait.

This probably isn't healthy, and it isn't that mature. But it doesn't bother me too much because I have as much social interaction as I need online, where my social skills are adequate, and my behavior actually does mostly mimic the norm. Here I'm good enough, and if I run into someone who's actually looking to hurt me, I can shut them down.

Still... I'm 30. You'd think I'd be over this by now.

Foyle's Guide to the Inside of Ellen's Head [Nov. 18th, 2008|07:11 pm]
So, kinda writer's blocked... this is what I do. It helps. And it gives me something to post on this journal that isn't another damn meme... :)

Foyle’s Guide to the Inside of Ellen’s Head

Welcome to the inside of the writer’s mental space. We’ll be taking a tour and seeing and/or meeting some of the myriad figures that make the writer’s daily interior life so… interesting. Please keep your hands and feet inside the car at all times; some of the bunnies are carnivorous. Also, no flash photography. It gets the attention of things you’d just as soon not be noticed by.

Part one- The Inhabitants

Fairies:

Fairies are what most other writers tend to classify as “muses.” These creatures tend to dictate plot, word choice, tonal quality, and so on. Fairies are highly intelligent, extremely articulate, and tend to be horribly pushy about getting what they want. Currently the Authorspace is home to four of these creatures: The Angst Fairy, The Fluff Fairy, The Action Faerie, and The Psycho Fairy.

The Angst Fairy:

Female, 5’ 8” tall when rendered human-scale. Shoulder length black, straight hair, pale skin, violet wings. She’s basically a Goth, dressed in a black leather corset and a purple velvet skirt. And black combat boots. Her weapon of choice is the Two-by-Four of Doom, used to whack the author over the metaphorical head and thereby convey events or dialog choices that will leave the reader going “Ouch” and possibly wanting to snuggle the main character. She really likes Conan, if that tells you anything… While she tries hard to hide it, she in fact has a very soft heart, which usually leads to even the most angsty pieces winding up with happy or at least hopeful endings.

The Fluff Fairy:

Female, 5’0”. Wears a tutu, ballet slippers, tights, and leotard all in varying shades of pink. Also a pair of fluffy bunny ears. Chin-length chestnut hair. Her main weapon is the Fluff Cannon, a large bazooka that fires Mokonas and Tribbles at a target. She loves sweet character moments, bonding, romance, and anything that be considered fluff. Her squee is capable of breaking glass. Beware when she gets hopped up on Pixie Sticks, because then no one is safe. She has a disturbing soft spot for Seto Kaiba and Mouri Kogoro. (No, I don’t get it either.)

The Action Faerie:

Male, bears an astonishing resemblance to Bruce Willis from the middle of “Die Hard.” Insists on the variant spelling of “Faerie” just so “nobody gets the wrong idea.” His weapon is a baseball bat with the word “Widowmaker” written on it. This is the guy who loves car chases, fight scenes, gunfights, martial arts, and Zord battles. Jet Li is his hero. Considers my fic “The Running Ranger” to be the best example of his craft, since he so rarely gets to work solo. (It’s not particularly a good fic, but don’t tell him that.)

The Psycho Fairy:

Male, 6’0”. He looks like a helmetless Bass/Forte from the Megaman game series, except clad in a straitjacket whose sleeves have not been secured. Has no particular weapon, he just has to grin at people. This is the guy directly responsible for anything I write that can be considered “disturbing” or “pure crack.” “Reasons” and “One Day at a Time” can be attributed to him, and he and Action worked very closely together to produce “Nerves of Steel.” They’re both very proud of that, too. As for personality, he is, in fact, nuts. Yami No Bakura is an idol of his, but he also has a fondness for Kaito, so you can imagine he’s got… varied interests. In his spare time, he enjoys tormenting the Fluff Fairy, who has a tendency to scream and run when confronted with silly little things like stuffed bunnies in hangman’s nooses…

In addition to the Fairies, we have SD-Ideas. These little pests are also known as “chibis” and sometimes referred to as “Creativity Demons,” a term coined by noted fanfic writer Mandi Ohlin. Chibis represent one particular story, and usually take the form of a SD version of the main character of said story. They act more as personification of the story, and their function is mostly limited to annoying the author until they get written up. Currently in the pens, we have FMA LA, incarnated as Roy Mustang, discussing explosions with a Chicagoverse Zack Fair. Four Kings, currently in the form of Hakuba Saguru, is trying to find a bed to hide under. There’s a SD-Shinichi and SD-Conan, currently reading mystery novels and trying to ignore the others. This is unsually peaceful for this group, I don’t expect it to last.

Roaming over the vast grasslands of Authorspace, we find the plotbunnies. These little fluffy facehuggers are basically inspiration given form. They’re the personification of the idea of “Wouldn’t it be COOL if…” Each Fairy has a corresponding bunny type, easily distinguished from other breeds by coat coloration and patterns… and by the REEEALLY disturbing grins on the Psychobunnies.

Angst Bunny: Dark, usually black or deep violet fur. Eyes are usually emerald green or, if truly disturbing, blood red. A lone exception is Darth Plotius, Dark Plunny of the Sith. This pure white bunny has a pair of feral yellow eyes, which are often hidden by the black cloak he wears. A word of advice- don’t piss him off, a plunny with a command of Force Lightning can be formidable indeed. Even if said lightning is a lovely shade of pink.

Fluff Bunny: White or pastel. Generally easy-going and good-natured, with a tendency to go into glomping frenzies. Often a new interest can go down under a swarm of these, and find him or herself covered in a purring fuzzy rug for hours at a time. The high-pitched giggling can get on travelers’ nevers, however.

Action Bunny: Bright colors, often red or blue, though bright silver bunnies have been noted on occasion. Often wearing clothes, they favor track jackets, leather jackets, and mirrored shades, though there is one red one that prefers gi and hakama. He identifies himself as the “Hitokiri Bunnousai,” and should be avoided whenever possible. Action Bunnies tend to be very active, often leaping from hiding upon the unsuspecting traveler and whacking them with a fully-formed fight sequence. Recently, they’ve learned how to use animation utilities, which makes them an even worse nuisance.

Psycho Bunnies: Psycho Bunnies tend to have the physical coloration of whichever other bunny type they most resemble, usually Angst or Action Bunnies. A Psycho Bunny can be distinguished by the following markers: A) A big, slightly insane grin often accompanied by evil giggling, B) carrying some sort of bladed object. Hitokiri Bunnousai is exempt, because he doesn’t GRIN like a Psycho Bunny, though there have been motions to reclassify him, and C) odd white patterns in the fur, which make your head hurt if you look at them too closely. Like Action Bunnies, Psycho Bunnies enjoy attacking from hiding, and have also gained access to the animation utilities.

Last, but not least, there are my Voices. These two have less to do with actual writing, and are a little more like the Author’s Shoulder Angel and Shoulder Devil. Lots of snarky running commentary on life and writing, not so much interaction with the plot.

Angel: Obi-Wan Kenobi. Circa the end of the Prequel Eras. Tends to be the voice of reason, restraint, and harmony. Is rapidly developing a drinking problem because of this. Emotions may be forbidden to Jedi, but sarcasm is not, for which he thanks the Force. Often.

Devil: Kyuubi. Yes, that’s Naruto’s Kyuubi. Specifically, the version in Foxie-Sama’s fanfic, “For the Love of my Friends.” I made the mistake of reading the whole thing in one sitting, and Kyuubi-sama moves in. He eats plotbunnies, so I don’t begrudge him the living space. Can basically be summed up in the comment I made to my friend Chris when I realized he was there: “Oh God. My Id has fur.”

That’s all for now. Be with us next time for Part 2, where we explore Places of Interest!

I'm alive! [Oct. 5th, 2008|10:40 pm]
Sorry. Between work and car trouble and insomnia and a heck of a lot else, I haven't been able to do much. Not writing, not LJ... Basically just been surviving. But I'm checking in now...

DC's been interesting. We're seeing a LOT of the Shonen Tantei, and they're getting much, much better. Ayumi seriously needs to invest in a taser or something, though, she's been a hostage WAY too often. Also, Okiya appears to be Bourbon, but... somehow, I have a feeling it's more complex than that. Gosho loves his red herrings.

Aside from that, this seemed like a very... I dunno, ordinary case, to be honest.

Also, I made my way through all of Eyeshield 21 in four days. This doesn't take nearly as much brainpower as writing does. I love Hiruma far, FAR more than I should... :)
